The canopy, ideal for providing shade on hot desert days, connects the main living space to six surrounding casitas and casts an everchang­ing pattern of shadow.

Indoor-outdoor fabrics were also specified in many places, given the easy back-and-forth between poolside and inside when the back wall is left open, as it is most of the time. For Todd Feldman, a film and television agent at Creative Artists Agency, it was not having to choose. Photovoltaic panels provide for nearly all of the house’s power needs, while a green roof insulates the home and mitigates storm water runoff.
